At last! We're back at it properly as the 2018/19 league season kicks off for Dundee at St Mirren. The stadium's looking nice and full - the Press box is bursting over capacity, too - as the Buddies lift the Championship winners flag. Can the Dark Blues spoil the party?
The players are out, walking between big flamethrower things in their new light blue and maroon top. They'll be hoping to extinguish the home side's enthusiasm quick sharp. Fireworks shooting skyward, too. It's all happening.
Game kicks off
- Early pressure from the home side as Willock wins a corner off Cammy Kerr...
- ...Hamilton is fouled, though, and the danger passes.
- Dundee setting up in what looks a 4-4-2 with a midfield diamond. Paul McGowan at the peak, Spence sitting with Madianga right and Ngwatala left. Cammy Kerr is back at left-back.
- More pressure from the home side as Magennis curls in a tempting cross from a wide free-kick. Eventually Meekings gets it clear.
- Chance Dundee! Up the right wing and Jesse Curran throws in a fine cross which Mendy meets but heads straight at Samson.
- And another chance for Dundee! Both Mendy and Moussa chase a ball in behind but the big Tunisian gets there first only to sclaff his shot wide under pressure. Good start to the game here.
- Corner St Mirren...
- ...Jack Baird meets the set-piece but his header drifts wide.
- Great atmosphere here, by the way. Both sets of fans in full voice.
GOAL! St Mirren 1-0 Dundee.
- Dundee are behind as Danny Mullen leaps to head past Hamilton.
GOAL! St Mirren 1-1 Dundee. Ngwatala
- Ooft! What a finish that was. The ball dropped to the edge of the area and Elton Ngwatala ran on to it and skelped it in off the post.
- Great game this so far.
- Dundee playing with a bit of confidence now. Corner to the Dark Blues...
- ...McGowan's kick is headed clear.
- Ouch. Moussa takes a knee to a tender area as he wins a free-kick on the wing.
- St Mirren have it in the net again but Cammy Smith was offside - also barged Cammy Kerr over illegally to cap it off.
- Good running from Moussa wins a corner...
- ...which comes to nothing.
- Chance St Mirren! The ball is crossed to the far post and Willock is there but heads over. Let off.
- Cammy Smith fizzes one towards goal but Jack Hamilton was always seeing it wide.
- Yellow card for Coulson for handball. Free-kick to Dundee about 30 yards out, central.
- Half-chance there for Moussa. The free-kick eventually brought a corner and after Caulker went for it, the ball dropped eight yards out but Moussa's brief look at goal disappeared pretty quickly.
- A risky ball from Mendy sets St Mirren off on a dangerous break but Dundee defend it really well with Caulker in charge.
- Dundee are lop-sided and Paul McGinn is free on the right - his effort at goal is pushed behind by Hamilton. The corner afterwards was dreadful and went straight out.
- Some comedy goalkeeping from Hamilton - he gets away with it, though. He's hoping the ball is going to come into the area, it doesn't, so he kicks it but it goes straight up, then he heads it, it goes behind him before he picks it up. Nice.
- Space opens up for Josh Meekings to shoot from range but his effort is pretty awful. Good clearance from the defender, I suppose...
- Great effort Meekings! Paul McGowan swings in a free-kick and the big defender is up really well but his header curls on to the roof of the net. Close.
- Close from St Mirren! Cammy Smith turns and hits it low but Hamilton pushes behind. Big save.
Really enjoyable first half in Paisley. Chances at both ends and two good goals, too. Dundee have looked shaky at times but look well capable of finding the net again.
Second half kicks off
- No changes from either side
- So close! How are Dundee not ahead? First Mendy misses a golden chance - and the ball completely - then Curran is in behind and puts a tantalising ball across the six-yard box but neither Moussa nor Mendy barrelling in can make contact.
- Dundee started this half really well. Moussa wins a corner...
- ...and Samson has to be on his toes as Moussa wins his header and the ball deflects goalwards but straight to the keeper.
- Dundee fans not happy with the referee as he spots a push from Mendy as the Dark Blues go for a second goal. Didn't seem much there, to be honest.
- Chance Mendy. Steven Caulker turns into a jinking winger, beating his man on the right and playing in Mendy. The striker cuts inside but his shot flies wide. Decent opportunity.
- PENALTY DUNDEE!
- Mendy beat Samson to the ball and the keeper brought him down. Moussa to take...
- SAVED
-Big chance for the Dark Blues goes begging as Samson dives to his left and beats out the penalty kick.
- Big chance Dundee! But Samson saves again! The ball comes off Moussa and Mendy is in but his shot from an angle hits Samson.
- Strong defending from Caulker as Dundee repel a couple of corner kicks.
- Mendy has a pop from range but it's a comfortable save for Samson.
- Dundee well on top this half but really need to take one of their chances. Where have we heard that before?
- Defending to do for Dundee. Corner St Mirren...
- ...it's taken short but Coulson's ball in is easy for Hamilton.
- Dangerous from Magennis but Cammy Kerr is on hand to belt the ball out of the six-yard box.
- Dundee in again - but Moussa is forced wide by Samson and the ball rolls out. Keeper is very slow off his line but did well there.
- Cammy Kerr got lucky there - he tried to cut back toward his own goal and was tackled, St Mirren were in but the ref gave a free-kick.
- St Mirren sub: Flynn on for Stewart
- Cammy on Cammy action as Smith is late on Kerr and gets booked.
- St Mirren's tails are up here as Coulson tries to power through but Kerr is there to mop up.
- Paul McGowan and Kharl Madianga having a heated discussion in midfield. Think pass the ball quicker is the message - with a few swearies thrown in, too.
GOAL! St Mirren 2-1 Dundee. Mullen
- Clanger from Hamilton! He trips over the ball and Cammy Smith says thanks very much before teeing up Mullen on the line. Shocker.
- St Mirren sub: McShane for Smith.
- Dundee sub: Wighton on for McGowan.
- McGowan not happy at all to be taken off there.
- St Mirren corner. Ball at the wrong end of the pitch.
- Dundee on the attack but Caulker's cross is poor.
- St Mirren sub: Kellermann on for Magennis.
- Three minutes added on
- Attendance: 5,470 - 1,208 away fans
+2 - Moussa gets a yellow. Not his day.
Still unsure how Dundee lost this game, it was all there for them. Chances came and went, a penalty too but a goalkeeping howler costs them dearly.
Goalscorer certainly needed. Lawrence Shankland scored twice for Ayr today...
