Hello everyone, ready for another season of fun, frolics and goals? I'm Thariq and it's my pleasure to be with you for United's opening game of the 2017/18 Premier League.
Here's the starting XI for United: De Gea, Valencia, Bailly, Jones, Blind; Matic, Pogba, Mata, Mkhitaryan, Rashford; Lukaku
Anthony Martial is on the bench so there's the season's first talking point. Overall though it looks like a strong starting XI fielded by Jose Mourinho.
West Ham's XI features the return of Javier Hernandez. The law of the ex states that he's bound to score. Here's hoping that won't be adhered to today.
West Ham starting XI: Hart; Zabaleta, Reid, Ogbonna, Masuaku; Noble, Obiang; Fernandes, Arnautovic, Ayew; Hernandez.
Over the past couple of seasons West Ham have frustrated United at Old Trafford. Last campaign they managed to draw 1-1 and the season before they featured in a goalless affair. Jose won't be too pleased if this encounter ends in a stalemate too.
Jose speaking to the cameras. Said that United were strong last season insofar as his side lost just the one game but at the same time he knows that more wins are required.
Peter Schmeichel is discussing Matic's role. Key point is that Matic will help free up Paul Pogba to play further forward.
If you needed any reminding United drew 10 matches at Old Trafford last term. All eyes will be on Romelu Lukaku as he'll be required to score the goals required to turn one point into three.
Glazers in town.
The teams are in the tunnel, The Stone Roses can be heard on the speaker systems and Antonio Valencia is ready to lead out United
The teams make their way to the pitch. Kick-off is not too far away now, the 2017/18 season is about to start.
KICK-OFF, WE HAVE KICK-OFF. A NEW PREMIER LEAGUE SEASON AT OLD TRAFFORD IS UNDERWAY!
An early ball forward by Matic doesn't come to much. Blind gives away a free kick on the left touchline.
Phil Jones wastes no time reintroducing himself to former teammate Javier Hernandez as he gives away a free kick
Valencia gives away a free kick and West Ham take it quickly as the United captain shows off his teeth to the ref. Nothing came of the visitor's attack though.
Five minutes gone and perhaps unsurprisingly no real rhythm or pattern of play has developed yet.
United clear and Lukaku is away down the left. United's new striker wins a corner.
Dangerous corner in by Blind which Bailly flicked on. On second glance maybe the Ivorian could have got more on his header.
Jones and Hernandez once again tussle. The Mexican wins a thrown on the left. Cross came in from Zabaleta which De Sea gathers and rolls out...
Pogba gets away smartly from his marker on the right and gets a cross in which is cleared. United still have possession.
Pogba lifts a ball into Lukaku who heads across goal but no one was there to capitalise. Mkhitarayan fires the ball over.
United starting to see more of the ball now as West Ham seem to be content to hold their shape. Another dangerous cross fizzed in from the right.
Mata nutmegs the left back and rolls the ball to Rashford who falls under a challenge but the ref gives nothing.
United subsequently win a corner which Mata takes. West Ham not looking too comfortable defending these.
Jones fires an awkward backpass to De Gea. The Spaniard deals with the ball though. A few tasty challenges later the crowd finds its voice.
Noble gives away a free kick which United take quickly. Mata darts in on the left hand side of the six-yard box but his shot is blocked by Hart. The ball finds it's way to Lukaku but the Belgian had a defender thwarting his effort on goal.
Hernandez has an effort just in the box but doesn't connect cleanly.
66% possession for United at the moment and once again they're looking for an opening. Rashford crosses the ball in from the left which the West Ham defender can only loop out for a corner.
Blind takes it but the corner doesn't come to much.
Arnautovic has the ball in the net but is offside.
Mata starting to float around the pitch to influence the play. United have seen lots of the ball but the Mata chance aside haven't really fashioned that many clear cut chances.
Mkhitaryan finds Rashford on the left. He tries to beat a few players and wins a corner.
West Ham clear and threaten to break with Arnautovic but Phil Jones slides in to deal with any problems.
Pogba dinks a beautiful ball to Juan Mata just on the left hand side of the six-yard box. The Spaniard opts to play the ball across goal to Lukaku when he may have been better advised to shoot.
United now win a succession of corners. Hart comes out to slap a ball away.
Replays showing Ogbonna holding on to Pogba in the box as one of the corners came in. Playing on the edge there is the West Ham defender.
Pogba gives away a free kick in a potentially dangerous position...but the ball in wasn't up to much and United break dangerously. The move breaks down as Rashford couldn't quite collect the pass from Lukaku
United have seen 84% of possession in the last 10 minutes. Pattern is set.
West Ham happy to play with scraps at the moment. We're seeing a very familiar story so far.
The new signings prove their worth. Matic wins the ball in midfield and is picked up by Rashford who drives forward before playing a through ball for Lukaku to run on to in the left hand side of the area. The Belgian lashes it home in off Joe Hart's near post.
United trying to turn the screw now. Pogba dances into the box and goes down but nothing given as Obiang wins the ball cleanly.
Matic fouls Zabaleta and the subsequent play sees Nobel shooting over.
The crowd has come alive and there's a certain swagger now to United's play. Valencia sweeps a ball from right to left and West Ham are getting pinned back. United win a corner.
Blind takes but it's cleared and United look to rebuild. Rashford is fouled and United take the free kick short.
Pogba plays it in but it's easy for former Torino keeper Joe Hart
Matic suddenly produces a dribble that CR7 would be proud of. Ball is cleared and is with West Ham who try to test De Gea to no avail. Still it's a warning to United not to slack off.
Rashford getting in Mourinho's good books by covering Zabaleta's run to see the ball out for a goal kick.
Valencia pulls back Chicharito. The Mexican hasn't had much in the way of opportunities but is winning his fair share of free kicks. Hernandez is fouled by Bailly who is given a yellow card for his trouble.
Masukaku tries to find room down United's right but Valencia slams the door shut on the West Ham attack.
We're coming to the end of the first half. There will be a minute of stoppage time to be played.
Pogba is starting to enjoy himself and just overhits a past Rashford.
CHANCE FOR WEST HAM!
A little disarray at the back sees Fernandes hit one straight at De Gea from the edge of the area. The whistle blows and it's half time.
So far so good for United though Jose would not have been pleased with his team giving up a very presentable chance right at the end. Matic has been playing the Jose would have liked and is securing the midfield allowing the likes of Pogba and Lukaku to do their stuff further up the pitch. Mata and Mkhitarayan have been playing clever passes though maybe the could to a bit more when on the ball whilst Rashford has vindicated his manager's decision to play him by setting up the first goal.
At the risk of being a wet blanket we've been here before last season. United need to close the game out in the 2nd half.
United have had 10 shots with 2 on target. West Ham have had just the 1 shot on target.
Schmeichel discussing what United should do. Unsurprisingly he's insisting that United look for a second and third to kill the game off once and for all. It's what Fergie would have done, will Jose follow suit? All shall be revealed in the second half.
Teams are coming back on to the pitch. Jose and Bilic are discussing the affairs of the world (or just the match) on the sidelines.
West Ham get the second half underway
Jones plays Blind into trouble and West Ham have a throw in United's third. Rashford gives away a free kick wide which is cleared by Pogba.
West Ham seeing a bit of the ball so far but not really getting anywhere.
Pogba plays in a beautiful pass for Rashford down the left who outpaces the West Ham defense. Rashford opens up his body but shoots wide. Should be scoring those in all fairness.
Another free kick for West Ham which Arnautovic swings into the area but is cleared by Blind. West Ham recycle possession and swing the ball in from the left. De Gea takes the ball comfortably and starts a United attack. Rashford runs down the wing and is fouled by Zabaleta who is booked.
United have a free kick in a dangerous area....GOAL! LUKAKU BRACE!
Mkhitaryan drinks the free kick in and Lukaku makes the finish look so simple heading the ball past a hapless Hart. That's the second goal!
Now this does make a change from last season. United have got the cushion of a second goal and Lukaku's personal crusade against West Ham continues...that's his 11th goal in 10 games against the Hammers.
Brilliant by Matic. As West Ham were trying to play out he closed their player down to win the ball. A few passes later United had the ball in the back of the West Ham net but it's ruled out for offside as Rashford strayed past the last man. Good build up play though.
HERNANDEZ HITS THE BAR!
Ball is played in from United's right and Hernandez managed to get the header away with Blind struggling. The ball hit the top of the bar. Another warning for United.
Valencia is booked for fouling Arnautovic. West Ham are making a couple of changes now. Sakho (who scored here last season) and Rice are on for Fernandes and Noble.
A bit of chaos in the United box as West Ham have a free header in the box...
But United break...Rashford down the left again drives into the box and lays the ball off to Mkhitaryan who in turn passes it to Lukaku whose shot is blocked.
The game is getting stretched now as West Ham are opening up. Pogba rolls the ball to Rashford who shoots over the bar.
Mkhitaryan has a little run and shot which Joe Hart collects.
West Ham's earlier opportunity from the corner fell to the substitute Sakho who maybe could have made more of the opportunity.
Matic there to clean up again. United attack down the left with Rashford who cuts in and UNLEASHES A TREMENDOUS EFFORT WHICH REBOUNDS OFF THE POST WITH HART BEATEN. United unlucky not to be 3-0 up.
Pogba is looking comfortable playing alongside Matic.
Bailly fouls Sakho. Free kick to West Ham about 40 yards out...and it's poor. United head clear but West Ham get the ball back. West Ham work the ball to United's left and get a cross in but again it's cleared.
Mata dropping deep to get the ball. He's enjoying a bit of license here.
Pogba and Mata combine well to release Valencia down the right who crosses in. Blind meets it on the volley but hits the ball into the ground and it bounces over the goal. United want the third.
Jose is chatting with Rui Faria. Changes on the way?
The Old Trafford crowd is in good voice now. United are two goals up and there's intent to score more.
Talk is that Fellaini could come on soon. Meanwhile Marcus Rashford once again charges down the left and wins a corner which Daley Blind wastes.
Fellaini is coming on.
Lukaku has an effort from distance but it sails over the bar.
Juan Mata (who else?) comes off and on in his place is football's living work of art Marouane Fellaini.
Jones steps in to block a pass. In truth United's defense has been relatively untroubled save for a couple of moments.
Ball comes into United's box by West Ham from their left and Blind gets under it but Arnautovic can only lash his shot over.
Jose talking to Martial. Could the Frenchman get a 10 minute run-out? Indeed he is coming on for Marcus Rashford
Rashford's been industrious today setting up a goal and ever willing to run at the West Ham defense. On another day he could have had a couple of goals.
West Ham making their last change. Masukaku is off and in his place comes on Aaron Creswell
Matic has played very well today. Always happy to receive the ball in tight areas and uses it so well.
Statement of intent from Martial. First run at the West Ham back line saw him cross a ball which Lukaku just failed to get to.
Bailly doing his level best to ensure that Aaron Cresswell doesn't win a corner.
Jesse Lingard will come on for the last few minutes.
Lukaku nearly in again after an interchange with Martial but...
GOAL FOR MARTIAL!
Pogba plays the ball to Mkhitaryan who plays a first time pass in to Martial who took the ball away from two West Ham defenders before sliding the ball home. Three and easy
And that assist was Mkhitaryan's last touch of the game he's off and Jesse Lingard is on.
West Ham get in to United's box but can't get a meaningful shot off and United regain possession. It's starting to look a bit like a training ground game...
GOAL! PAUL POGBA!
United just played the ball about with ease. Matic played the ball to Martial who tapped the ball on to Pogba. United's record signing took the pass in his stride and placed a shot past Joe Hart.
There are three minutes of stoppage time. United are 4-0 up, Old Trafford is in full voice, this is just the start Jose would have wanted.
The full time whistle goes.
MOVE OVER HUDDERSFIELD, UNITED ARE TOP OF THE LEAGUE!
A brace by Lukaku, one from Martial and the proverbial cherry on the cake was provided by Paul Pogba.
Last season United ground out a regulation 2-0 win in their opening game of the season. Today United's opponents were swept aside. In a crazy weekend of football this performance by Jose's team was refreshingly assured.
