  1. Good evening comrades, and welcome to this evenings LIVE BLOG coverage of United's quarter final, first leg Champions League encounter against the reigning champions Bayern Munich. Relatively fresh from recapturing the Bundesliga, the German's have simply forgotten what it's like to lose. United under Moyes this season have had the opposite problem, and few are backing them to progress

    Brad
  2. Any positives to cling onto? Bar the disarray of Greece, United have bucked their league form and performed well in Europe this season. Knocking Olympiakos out in the last 16 felt like rolling back the years somewhat to the European glory nights of the Ferguson era. Munich are of course an entirely different proposition

    Brad
  3. English teams in the shape of Manchester City and Arsenal have caused Munich problems this season though, the former winning at the Alianz Arena. A missed penalty and red card in the match at Highbury altered the dynamic of that contest

    Brad
  4. Team news to follow

    Brad
  5. Manchester United: De Gea, Jones, Ferdinand, Vidic, Buttner, Valencia, Carrick, Fellaini, Giggs, Rooney, Welbeck

    Brad
  6. Subs: Lindegaard, Hernandez, Nani, Young, Fletcher, Kagawa, Januzaj

    Brad
  7. Kagawa's impressive start against Villa doesn't get him in the line up tonight, but Giggs does come back in after his masterclass against Olympiakos in the last round. Changes at the back almost forced on Moyes by injuries and suspension. Only the 6th time Ferdinand and Vidic start together in the Champions League

    Brad
  8. Bayern Munich: Neuer, Rafinha, Javi Martinez, Boateng, Alaba, Robben, Lahm, Schweinsteiger, Ribery, Kroos, Muller

    Brad
  9. Subs: Starke, Van Buyten, Mandzukic, Shaqiri, Pizarro, Gotze, Hojbjerg

    Brad
  10. Gotze can't get in the starting line up for Munich tonight, even with Thiago ruled out with injury and Muller up front in place of Mandzukic. That's how strong their midfield is!

    Brad
  11. Both teams are in the tunnel. This could be United's last game in the Champions League for at least 18 months

    Brad
  12. Or it could be the night David Moyes justifies the faith he's been shown by the Old Trafford hierarchy that have backed him to the hilt so far

    Brad
  13. Great atmosphere in the stadium, if there's a sense of trepidation in the air, it didn't come across

    Brad
  14. A hearty handshake and chat between Guardiola and Moyes as they approach the dugout. Munich will get us under way, United defend the Stretford End

    Brad
  15. Valencia in sharp on Alaba, an early statement of intent and gets a cheer from the fans

    Brad
  16. Many have worried leading up to the game about the Buttner v Robben match up. Buttner shows composure with his first involvement, rolling the ball back to De Gea

    Brad
  17. Vidic takes his eye off the ball there and Robben steals in from a wayward Rafinha pass. Alaba eventually with a cross in, but Buttner brings it down far post and clears for a throw

    Brad
  18. Welbeck finds the back of the net, but it's ruled out for high feet. Wouldn't be given domestically, Martinez ducked down to head the ball to make it look worse

    Brad
  19. Great play in the build up between Rooney and Valencia, both of whom really look pumped for the contest. Welbeck's control and finish reminiscent of Andy Cole against Spurs in 1999

    Brad
  20. Ribery tries to wriggle into the area past three players, he does Fellaini and Ferdinand, but Vidic watches the ball all the way, and wins a foul as he takes possession

    Brad
  21. Welbeck with a glorious backheel wide right near the half way line, does Alaba all ends up. Attempts a second but gets crowded out

    Brad
  22. Rafinha the danger down the right flank for Bayern, he's bombing past Robben and the Bayern midfielders are looking to find him at the earliest opportunity. Robben cuts in past Carrick, attempts a left footed curler but it's comfortably wide

    Brad
  23. Jones shows he's just as adapt at bombing forward, and he wins a deep attacking throw in. Boateng clears the attempted cross

    Brad
  24. Neuer takes a massive chance dwelling on the ball from a Rafinha backpass, Rooney is close to taking it off him, the shanked clearance not far away from Fellaini either. Poor goalkeeping

    Brad
  25. United giving as good as they get with ten minutes gone, this display a world away from the insipid start against Manchester City at home only a week ago

    Brad
  26. What a chance for Muller. Ribery and Robben combine down the right, the former finds the ball at the byline. Chipped back to Muller who gets his feet in a mess with the goal gaping

    Brad
  27. United showing adventure, but the German's look so potent on the counter

    Brad
  28. Robben wins a corner. Everytime it looks like he's lost the ball, he somehow retains it

    Brad
  29. Muller and Jones get a ticking off from the ref for pulling shirts. Ferdinand heads out and it's a second corner

    Brad
  30. Boateng wins it, but it falls around the penalty spot. Fellaini can't clear it and the ball bobbles around dangerously before finally being punted away

    Brad
  31. 70% possession so far for Bayern, probably no surprise there given who their manager is

    Brad
  32. Valencia late on Lahm, and the German reaction is furious, several men pointing accusing fingers and surrounding the ref. Was slightly late but nothing particularly bad, referee does produce yellow though

    Brad
  33. Robben and Ribery are running the show now, combination down the right this time and Buttner scrambles it out near post for a corner, which is taken quickly and comes to nothing

    Brad
  34. When Bayern have the ball, their midfield really does push high up the field, Kroos and Schweinsteiger are almost permanent fixtures halfway into the United half. Long range effort from Ribery goes miles wide, and the Frenchman gets suitably ribbed by the United fans behind the goal

    Brad
  35. First ten minutes were competitive, last ten have been heavily one sided in the visiting teams favour. Starting to look like a matter of time before the breakthrough comes, albeit De Gea not genuinely tested yet

    Brad
  36. Rafinha shoots, Vidic blocks, but the ball just keeps coming back

    Brad
  37. Kroos slips, and Fellaini steals in. Finally a chance for United to break, but a woeful pass from Rooney and it's a gifted throw in to Munich

    Brad
  38. Ribery looks for Robben over the top, again Vidic seems to misjudge it and is lucky the Dutchman doesn't steal in behind him. Referee and linesman look at each other blankly, they guess at giving a goal kick

    Brad
  39. Jones dives in on Ribbery and gets summarily roasted for his troubles, need to show more guile in defence than that

    Brad
  40. Kroos the latest to shoot from distance, is this a tactic Guardiola has encouraged? He hasn't been watching De Gea this season if it is. Charged down by Carrick anyway

    Brad
  41. Munich getting players to the byline at will. Alaba the latest to zip a cross in, it's too high and fast for anyone to get on the end of though

    Brad
  42. Schweinsteiger is the director general in the Munich midfield, spraying it one way then the other. General standard of crossing has been poor though. Any time they do give the ball away - and it really isn't often at the moment - they're so fast to press and win it back as United make mistakes under pressure

    Brad
  43. Welbeck has the ball in the Bayern box momentarily, but no other red shirt is close to him, and the two Munich defenders muscle him out of it

    Brad
  44. Muller drives the ball across from the left, looks inviting for Robben but it's past him before he can properly react. No floated crosses here, everything is being fizzed in

    Brad
  45. Brilliant ball from deep finds Welbeck wide right. He's forced inside, had to come back to Fellaini, and the imminent danger is averted, but at least possession is retained for a period

    Brad
  46. Great save, De Gea sprawls to his right and keeps out a deft Robben goal bound left footed curler

    Brad
  47. Corner cleared, back out wide to Kroos, and that cross is terrible. Over the top of everyone and out for a goal kick

    Brad
  48. United pressure! Giggs looking for a through ball to Rooney but it's cut out, falls to Welbeck who shoots from the edge of the area, straight at Neuer

    Brad
  49. Fellaini onside, in the Munich area. Lays it back to Rooney, who shoots... and it's charged down

    Brad
  50. End to end! Ribery and Jones slip in the United area, nearly fell to Muller but it's scrambled back to De Gea who gets it away

    Brad
  51. Rafinha smashes the ball at Buttner, claims for a penalty as several team mates appeal, nothing given though. The game is suddenly very stretched

    Brad
  52. It did hit Butner's hand, but never in a million years was it deliberate, fired from a yard or two away from him, arms by his side

    Brad
  53. Fellaini is Munich's best source of possession at the moment, keeps giving it away cheaply. Alaba falls on his arse to the mirth of the United fans when attempting another cross. Lots of slipping and sliding out there, wet top surface

    Brad
  54. Jones finally wins one of his duels against Ribery, again falls over as he does though and his clearance falls straight to Kroos

    Brad
  55. Vidic with a brilliant last gasp challenge, if he doesn't read the game perfectly there Muller scores as Alaba squares one low and hard across goal

    Brad
  56. Fellaini losses the ball again, it's the gift that keeps on giving. He does atone this time by heading the resultant cross in clear, ironic cheers from the stands for his efforts

    Brad
  57. Shades of United v Fulham earlier in the season, only the away team are the dominant force. No sign of a goal against the run of play yet

    Brad
  58. Welbeck is through on goal! Oooh but he's tried to chip Neuer who stands tall and palms it away, what a chance! Best of the game, he had acres of space having beaten Boteng to the ball from a Rooney pass

    Brad
  59. The crowd is rocking, that move has them going. Welbeck will rue not trying to fire it either side of Neuer

    Brad
  60. Muller hits the ball against Ferdinand to win another corner

    Brad
  61. De Gea claims unchallenged and launches it to Welbeck. He's through on goal again but this time it's a clear foul on Rafinha. Neuer was out quick to clear anyway

    Brad
  62. Munich look dangerous coming forward, but so far they've been unable to pass it through a compact United defensive unit, and the crossing from both flanks not good enough to make the breakthrough either

    Brad
  63. Valencia shoots dangerously from the right, deflected over for a corner. Welbeck was clipped in the box in the build up by Lahm, or maybe just outside, accidental but the referee could have given something there

    Brad
  64. Giggs curls it in, but it's put back out for another corner, which will never be taken as the referee ends a pulsating, if mostly one sided, half. Best chance of the match by a country mile fell at the feet of Welbeck though

    Brad
  65. The pace of Welbeck is the threat from United, but he's rarely been on the ball, simply because Munich have retained it so adeptly. And when they do lose it, Fellaini more than anyone has been quickest to surrender it back to them

    Brad
  66. When the ball goes wide to Valencia he's been able to causes Alaba down the right, but again rarely has he had it in attacking positions. Giggs has picked up a couple of wonderful balls, he's spent most of his night so far chasing shadows though

    Brad
  67. On the balance of play, United will be happy to be in level at half time. It's a spirited performance, a huge improvement on recent displays home to Liverpool and City, but there's a huge gap in the class of both sides

    Brad
  68. Seen a replay of the Welbeck disallowed goal. Referee's give that kind of decision in their sleep in Europe, but there really was little wrong with it. The duck of the head by Martinez sways it for the official. Fabulous technique in setting up the chance and volleying home though

    Brad
  69. United didn't really give the ball away with too many men committed in attacking areas first half, so Munich didn't have the chance to break at pace. Instead, they had to try and break down the United banks of defence, who managed to keep a disciplined shape throughout. The German's managed to get in behind down both flanks, but the quality ended there

    Brad
  70. Half time change by Moyes, Kagawa replacing Giggs

    Brad
  71. Not tactical, ITV report it's a groin injury for the Welshman

    Brad
  72. Kagawa slips immediately, surely the home players at least should know how heavily the pitch gets watered at Old Trafford by now?!

    Brad
  73. Rafinha finds Schweinsteiger in the box, he's under pressure from Carrick but a good first touch gives him the chance to get a shot away - and hit the side netting

    Brad
  74. Carrick over the top, Martinez seems comfortable but Kagawa has more pace and it's a slightly panicked clearance in the end

    Brad
  75. Anywhere will do for Ferdinand, who does well to intercept a ball through from Ribery, but straight out of play under immediate pressure from Muller

    Brad
  76. Rafinhi has it wide right, shapes to pass to Robben but doesn't, then does... and it rolls out embarrassingly for a goal kick

    Brad
  77. The Munich players look to have so much more energy than United, so quick to press as a unit, Barcelona were the same under Guardiola. How does he do it?

    Brad
  78. Buttner smashes the ball against Robben's face and it's out for a goal kick!

    Brad
  79. Carrick over the top, Rooney looks to be onto it, but Neuer acts as a sweeper and is quick off his line to clear for a throw. That's taken quickly, crossed in, Rooney meets it but no power and straight down Neuer's throat

    Brad
  80. Nice move from Bayern, the closest they've come to passing through a set United defensive line, Ferdinand's reading of the game ends the danger with a cunning interception

    Brad
  81. Fine atmosphere tonight, the United fans in full vocal spirit. Red Army has been belting out for the last five minutes and comes to a crescendo now

    Brad
  82. A kick up the backside for Fellaini at half time? Better so far second half, hasn't given the ball away once, a bit sharper with his general play

    Brad
  83. Rooney looking for the head of Fellaini in the box, somehow outjumped by Alaba. This is a more even contest second half

    Brad
  84. But then Munich break, Robben cuts in from the right, lays it to Muller who shoots... charged down by Ferdinand

    Brad
  85. Kagawa wins a corner for United, Rooney to take

    Brad
  86. GOAL for Manchester United 1-0

    Brad
  87. Get in you beauty Nemanja Vidic! Great cross, it's frankly shoddy defending from Munich, Welbeck left alone to stand on the keeper, Martinez doesn't bother to move with Vidic who has to move backwards and head it back across himself, but it nestles into the corner of the net!

    Brad
  88. The atmosphere was good before, it's on another level now. Munich are here for the taking suddenly

    Brad
  89. Martinez fouls Welbeck. Taken quickly, Rooney finds Kagawa, and Neuer has to be quick to punch it away from him out for a throw

    Brad
  90. Munich are rocking. Foul by Schweinsteiger on Carrick, yellow card

    Brad
  91. What a waste. Rooney floats the ball up and over all the assembled bodies in the penalty area for a goal kick

    Brad
  92. Muller is withdrawn, with the more conventional striker Mandzukic replacing. In truth Muller was rarely the furthest forward of the Munich players, dropping deep as Kroos and the widemen overlapped him

    Brad
  93. Ferdinand with yet another blocked shot, this time stopping Kroos

    Brad
  94. Boateng shoots from fully 45 yards. Seems desperate, but he really does cream it and De Gea requires a smart stop to keep it out

    Brad
  95. GOAL for Bayern Munich 1-1

    Brad
  96. Critical away goal for Munich, and it's Schweinsteiger who scores it. Rafinha to the byline, goes deep to Mandzukic who's pulled off his man, and nods it down for the most German man in history to finish

    Brad
  97. Valencia is down injured, and Munich attack against ten with Robben

    Brad
  98. Buttner does brilliantly, not only does he stop Robben, he even manages to win a goal kick

    Brad
  99. Looks like Valencia will continue. Kagawa and Vidic are deep in conversation as the game takes a pause. De Gea to get us underway again with a goal kick

    Brad
  100. Twenty minutes to go. Robben cuts in again from the left, it's a familiar movement from the Dutchman. Buttner powerless to stop him getting a shot off, but he's set the curler off too far wide of the post and De Gea breathes a sigh of relief

    Brad
  101. Fellaini makes a really good run beyond Rooney, who attempts a flick that doesn't quite come off. If he finds him there, Fellaini is through on goal

    Brad
  102. Notable Fellaini is now playing much more advanced, in fact he's the furthest man forward on occasion

    Brad
  103. Valencia in late, he's in trouble...

    Brad
  104. He and Boateng are both sliding in late for the ball, no question Valencia catches him. The Referee does him a huge favour and takes no further action. They both perhaps went in as dangerously as the other, neither challenge was clever, but other officials would have produced a second yellow there

    Brad
  105. Buttner has to go off injured, Young to replace him. Reshuffle time for Moyes

    Brad
  106. Kroos off for Gotze meanwhile

    Brad
  107. Looks like it'll be Valencia right back and Jones left back for the remainder of the game

    Brad
  108. Rooney with a lovely turn in midfield, seems to be fouled by Lahm but carries on regardless. Young comes forward with it, Bayern repel the initial danger but it eventually goes out for a corner

    Brad
  109. Young takes it, Rafinha clears. Back to Young, low cross wide right, but poor quality and it comes to nothing

    Brad
  110. Alaba crosses from the left, deflects and falls nicely for Robben in the area. He's on his right foot though and drags it slightly, good chance but wide

    Brad
  111. Not much between the two teams this half, Bayern still having more ball, but United much better at keeping it themselves

    Brad
  112. Really neat play from Robben, with a cheeky inside pass to Ribery, who then pulls off an even cheekier pull back and it's across the face of goal, but Mandzukic can't get there. That all came from Kagawa trying to dribble it away from his own area and giving it away, sloppy

    Brad
  113. Vidic has been upended, and Mandzukic gets a yellow. Didn't see what happened there

    Brad
  114. On replay, does seem like a slight clip of the arm on Vidic's chin. Nothing intentional, and Ferdinand seems to be making more of it than Vidic, who is fine

    Brad
  115. Robben is such a threat, defenders just can't work out with way he's going to go, so adept he is on both feet. More often than not he's cutting inside onto his left though, whereas the defenders usually seem to anticipate him going the other way

    Brad
  116. Welbeck's night is up, and Hernandez will replace for the final five

    Brad
  117. Robben beats Jones for pace, but only by virtue of a shirt pull, and a free kick is given. Incredible versatility from Jones with his ability to switch positions

    Brad
  118. Hernandez causing problems already, forces Alaba to put the ball out deep in the Bayern half

    Brad
  119. Valencia cross, it's Kagawa meeting it but he heads it behind him... no reds there and Bayern break. Until Vidic puts an end to it with a calculating foul

    Brad
  120. Gotze with a burst of pace, tries to slide in Robben. Vidic again having none of it

    Brad
  121. Martinez chops Henandez cynically as he gets turned. The Mexican is through on goal, but there's enough distance between him and the goal to allow the referee only to produce a yellow card. Martinez out of the second leg, but Dante will be back for the German's anyway

    Brad
  122. Schweinsteiger is off, red card!

    Brad
  123. It's a second yellow, a foul on Rooney. Words between the two of them, Schweinsteiger clearly thinks Wayne has milked it. No question it was late and worthy of a yellow, that's his second and he rightly walks

    Brad
  124. We're into injury time, just three minutes. Enough time to capitalise?

    Brad
  125. I've not used the word 'efficient' once tonight, which deserves credit. But it is canny by Munich now, they're wasting time away like nobodies business

    Brad
  126. The long ball tactics of United here aren't subtle, time is short but surely the ball could be worked forward better than that. Carrick from his own half, out for a goal kick

    Brad
  127. A goal kick Neuer takes about 30 seconds over, although in fairness he is having stuff thrown at him from behind the goal. The referee blows his whistle before he takes the kick, full time 1-1

    Brad
  128. Cracking cup tie, particularly for a first leg. Munich will come away from that disappointed not to have made more of their territorial advantage, spending vast chunks of time in possession in the United half. But it was also much improved from United, playing it clever when needed and ensuring enough men were behind the ball. In the end, two relatively soft goals on the night, and Munich have the away goal advantage heading into the second leg

    Brad
  129. Credit to Moyes for his tactics tonight, not sure he could have played that any other way. He's managed to get a bit of a reaction out of his players on a big night, although you'd still have to say the players out there are capable of producing more. Confidence short first half as Bayern dominated and the ball was given away at will, but better second half

    Brad
  130. Only seven Munich men in the box for the United corner that led to the Vidic goal. For such a well drilled side, it was chronic defending

    Brad
  131. Not sure what Schweinsteiger was complaining about, needlessly dives in on Rooney who has the ball not far outside his own area. Rooney tries to avoid the contact, but it's a no brained second yellow. In fairness, Valencia arguably could have walked ten minutes earlier, slightly lucky boy. The referee perhaps influenced by Alaba diving in similarly for the challenge

    Brad
  132. Well, against most predictions, this game is still alive going into the second leg! Bayern played well, and you'd still expect them to go through, but United have generally performed better away from Old Trafford this season. English teams have done well at the Allianz recently, so you never know...

    Brad
  133. Hope you enjoyed the RoM Live Blog coverage tonight, I'll be back for the second leg, and of course you'll be able to follow the Premier League game against Newcastle on here too. Final word goes to Dela

    Brad
  134. "Obviously Bayern still have the edge for the second leg, but we made our mark on them tonight, we weren’t so easily walked over after all, and we had seriously good chances and scored. Noticed Moyes looked disappointed that we didn’t win it, I felt the same way because I felt we had Bayern shaken more than once"

    Brad
