  1. Good evening comrades, and welcome to this evenings LIVE BLOG coverage of Manchester United at home to Olympiakos as the English champions bid for a spot in the Champions League quarter finals. Two nil down, the United players will need to summon the spirit of 84, 99, or frankly any other era than the current Moyes one in order to progress. It surely can't get any lower Sunday against the Scousers, right? Meek defeat tonight and the managers position surely hangs by a fibre

    Daniel Stapleton
  2. Of course, it could be tonight is the corner turned, a new dawn cusped etc etc. Time will tell, and bar the first leg in this round, United have performed well in this competition under Moyes. Team news follows

    Daniel Stapleton
  3. United: De Gea, Da Silva, Jones, Ferdinand, Evra, Welbeck, Giggs, Carrick, Valencia, Rooney, van Persie

    Daniel Stapleton
  4. Bench: Lindegaard, Hernandez, Young, Fletcher, Kagawa, Fellaini, Januzaj

    Daniel Stapleton
  5. Olympiakos: Roberto, Leandro Salino, Manolas, Marcano, Holebas, Perez, Ndinga, Dominguez, Maniatis, David Fuster, Campbell

    Daniel Stapleton
  6. Bench: Megyeri, Paulo Machado, Samaris, Haedo Valdez, Papadopoulos, Vergos, Bong Songo

    Daniel Stapleton
  7. A 40 year old comes into midfield for United, but what a 40 year old. Giggs, Ferdinand, Welbeck and Valencia all start tonight

    Daniel Stapleton
  8. Five minutes til kick off. The United support at Old Trafford has been pretty incredible given some of the drudge on offer, and they'll play a key part tonight. This time a year ago, roared on by raucous backing from the stands, United were outplaying Madrid and looking set to progress to the next round, until the Turkish referee decided it was 'look at meeee' time. Feels a lot longer than 12 months ago right about now

    Daniel Stapleton
  9. Both teams coming out of the tunnel. The match will be officiated by Dutch referee Björn Kuipers, who took charge of last seasons Europa Cup Final. Clinging to straws of hope, an English team won on that occasion...

    Daniel Stapleton
  10. Vidic is an injury absence tonight. Moyes has talked down stories of a rift between some of his playing staff and himself after the Liverpool game. He'll need the senior players who feature tonight to step up to the plate for him

    Daniel Stapleton
  11. Olympiakos kick off, and as usual, United defend the Stretford End first half

    Daniel Stapleton
  12. Rooney appears to be playing in midfield, with Van Persie up front alone. Phil Jones gives away a free kick earlier, and Olympiakos have the opportunity to get the ball into the box

    Daniel Stapleton
  13. Domínguez takes, but it's a poor floated ball in, and it's comfortably dealt with

    Daniel Stapleton
  14. Rooney looks to play Welbeck through on goal from deep, decent run but too much on the pass

    Daniel Stapleton
  15. Already some tetchiness from the stands, poor defending nearly lets Olympiakos in, and having survived that, the United break is curtailed by poor a poor pass from Valencia

    Daniel Stapleton
  16. Giggs curls a lovely ball through to Welbeck, and he has his defender Manolas on toast. The defender resorts to hacking his man down and receives a yellow card for his troubles

    Daniel Stapleton
  17. Rooney takes, and takes a direct strike on goal. No real fizz on it, the keeper could comfortably catch but instead opts for a bunny punch away. For a moment it looks like it will fall for Valencia, but there's a clash of heads, and Valencia has a real shiner instantly! Looks nasty

    Daniel Stapleton
  18. In fact, Valencia will be doing well to see out of his right eye right now it's swollen so bad. Play was stopped as he took treatment

    Daniel Stapleton
  19. He's back on the pitch, and gives a soft free kick away as Campbell shield the ball in a wide attacking position. His right eye is closed with the swelling, he'll surely have to come off

    Daniel Stapleton
  20. Domínguez with another shocking free kick, rolled across the edge of the area. United intercept, it's with Valencia on the break and he's taken out cruedly. Another yellow card

    Daniel Stapleton
  21. Referee is card happy, Carrick is the latest in the book. Domínguez took the yellow for Olympiakos, trying to atone for his original mistake

    Daniel Stapleton
  22. Rooney battles to win the ball wide right, and slides a ball towards Van Persie in the middle. Just for a moment it looks like he's in, but the defender does just enough to crowd him out. Close

    Daniel Stapleton
  23. Certainly a more lively United performance so far than we saw at the weekend, but the frailties are still bubbling under the surface. Yet another foul, this time from Fuster. The referee is going to be busy tonight

    Daniel Stapleton
  24. Our one eyed wonder is the latest to hack his man down, Ndinga clutching his ankle. The ref realises he has to tone his act down, and keeps his cards to himself this time

    Daniel Stapleton
  25. Attack attack attack come the chants. And United do, Welbeck wins a corner and up comes Ferdinand and Jones

    Daniel Stapleton
  26. Rooney plays it in, but it's dealt with. He gets the ball back and tries again, but no success and United are on the back foot

    Daniel Stapleton
  27. What a chance. Campbell to the byline, Jones can't stay with him, the ball is rolled off to Perez. It's a clear sight at goal from about 10 yards out, but he gets underneath it. Best chance so far

    Daniel Stapleton
  28. I'm staggered Valencia is continuing, but in fairness he's not let the injury affect him too badly. Rooney is fouled just outside the area... but the referee gives nothing

    Daniel Stapleton
  29. Our Scouser is angry, and he takes it out on the post! Fine header, so unlucky

    Daniel Stapleton
  30. It was a Giggs floated ball from deep, Rooney got there first, and actually the keeper Gago just got a fingertip on it as it deflected onto the post

    Daniel Stapleton
  31. Evra is the last line of defence, and stops Campbell from going one on one with De Gea. Olympiakos look feisty on the break

    Daniel Stapleton
  32. Rafael wins another corner for United, good entertainment so far

    Daniel Stapleton
  33. Giggs takes but can't pick out a fellow red. Ferdinand has it, he's asking for movement from his team mates. Again the crowd slightly restless as they see the lack of movement. Then the referee accidentally gets in the way and breaks down the United move

    Daniel Stapleton
  34. Young and Januzaj warming up, surely a matter of time for Valencia's exit now

    Daniel Stapleton
  35. Surely a penalty?! It is! Holebas through the back of Van Persie

    Daniel Stapleton
  36. No question about the one, Van Persie was chesting the ball down in the area, and his opponent barged him down. The Dutchman will take it, they say that's bad luck...

    Daniel Stapleton
  37. GOAL for Manchester United 1-0

    Daniel Stapleton
  38. Van Persie buries it low and hard to the keepers left. Just as well, Gago guessed the right way

    Daniel Stapleton
  39. 25 minutes played, United need another to square the tie and ultimately take it to penalties if there's no further score thereafter; two more to win through. The threat of an away goal means this game will be on a knife edge until the last

    Daniel Stapleton
  40. Welbeck goes on a mazy Giggs like run, beats two men but can't quite do enough to get past the third. Olympiakos break, and manage to win their first corner of the game

    Daniel Stapleton
  41. Well. It's played short, comes back to the taker Domínguez, and it's a brilliant whipped ball in. Last gasp clearance I think from Jones, any striker gambling there and the game is level on the night

    Daniel Stapleton
  42. De Gea has a moment. Takes an age to clear the ball from his feet, and Fuster nearly catches him out. Danger averted though

    Daniel Stapleton
  43. Valencia's closed eye makes no discernible difference to his crossing - that one finds the arms of the keeper

    Daniel Stapleton
  44. The referee confuses everyone by stopping the game, but not making it clear why. Ultimately United have a free kick, seems to be for offside but who can be sure

    Daniel Stapleton
  45. Anything Valencia can do, Perez can do better. That cross finds orbit

    Daniel Stapleton
  46. United certainly aren't afraid to go direct tonight, in fact many of United's best moments have come from that route. Ferdinand and Giggs are playing the balls up, and it is causing the Greeks problems. Another corner won for United

    Daniel Stapleton
  47. Van Persie to take this one, the third different taker

    Daniel Stapleton
  48. Brilliant save! Captain Evra rose highest, seems to hit his shoulder, but it's heading for the top corner until it gets a tip over

    Daniel Stapleton
  49. Van Persie catches Olympiakos out by taking a quick throw and releasing Valencia. United well on top now

    Daniel Stapleton
  50. Fortunate referee decision, Van Persie drops deep but stands on the ball, yet he's awarded a free kick. Would have been a dangerous moment otherwise

    Daniel Stapleton
  51. Ndinga trips Welbeck to give away a free kick. Giggs pitch wedges one in, and it's out for a goal kick

    Daniel Stapleton
  52. Incredible double save by De Gea keeps the tie alive. Fuster heads from a few yards out, patted away, there's a second effort at goal and it's an even better save with the legs

    Daniel Stapleton
  53. End to end, United appeal for a penalty but it's turned down. Valencia thought he'd been taken out, the referee disagrees

    Daniel Stapleton
  54. Maniatis is confused, he fouls his man and seems incredulous he himself hasn't won the free kick. Rafael fouled, Rooney to cross

    Daniel Stapleton
  55. Just grazes Welbeck's head, lovely ball in. But United come again with Van Persie... until it's cleared for a throw

    Daniel Stapleton
  56. Gorgeous from Rooney, side steps his man, cracks one off on his left but it's charged down

    Daniel Stapleton
  57. Maniatis did foul Valencia before incidentally, should have been a free kick on the edge, although the United man eventually landed in the area

    Daniel Stapleton
  58. A really high tempo game, it's hard to keep pace! Evra burst down the left and is so close to finding Rooney, but then it's Marcano on the break, and they look dangerous coming forward. This could easily go either way. One minute of added time

    Daniel Stapleton
  59. GOAL for Manchester United 2-0

    Daniel Stapleton
  60. Who says Rooney and Van Persie can't play together? Rooney gets a bit of luck, poor first touch but it bounces back off the defender back into his path. No luck involved thereafter, he picks out Van Persie and it's a consummate slotted finish. The refree blows for half time, and Moyes is trotting down the touchline like a man who's been handed a lifeline!

    Daniel Stapleton
  61. Well, that was breathless. Olympiakos have made a real contest of it, they've had their own bright moments, and really should have scored with minutes remaining of the first half. It was spectacular goalkeeping from De Gea to keep them out. That said, United are good value for their lead, much more energy and quality out there tonight

    Daniel Stapleton
  62. Some of the passing from Giggs was a class apart, he might not have the legs of yesteryear, but he's still capable of the sublime. It was his ball that picked out Rooney in the build up to the United second goal

    Daniel Stapleton
  63. My man of the half was Welbeck, his movement and pulling apart of the Olympiakos defence has made a huge different to the one paced United attack we saw against Liverpool

    Daniel Stapleton
  64. Just remembered it was also Giggs perfect long ball for the first goal too, although it really was Greeks bearing gifts (groan) with the cheap penalty they gave away

    Daniel Stapleton
  65. Domínguez was the player who drew the second of two top class saves from De Gea late on. As good as the keeping was, the Olympiakos man really ought to have buried it, they'll rue that moment if United put them out

    Daniel Stapleton
  66. Valencia was lively even after his injury. Perhaps the Gabrielle approach is the way to go in future

    Daniel Stapleton
  67. Second half about to get under way

    Daniel Stapleton
  68. If you're not seeing pictures of the game, let me assure you if Valencia was in a boxing contest, the referee would have stopped the fight instantly. He can't see a thing out of that right eye surely, a genuine egg has ballooned up on him there

    Daniel Stapleton
  69. Giggs stands over a free kick. He really has made the case for regular inclusion for the rest of this campaign, at least for as long as his legs will carry him. He's been a class apart with his passing

    Daniel Stapleton
  70. Yet another glorious ball from the Welshman, laser Scholes like accuracy out wide to Evra's feet. But the ball is given away... until Rooney chases back and saves the day

    Daniel Stapleton
  71. Salino crosses, and it's notable how many Olympiakos players are in the box on this break, any of four men could get on the end of that. None make a great contact though, it's a goal kick

    Daniel Stapleton
  72. Rooney produces a dribbling masterclass, he coasts past three men in midfield and plays it through to Welbeck. He's pulled down, and this is a very dangerous free kick for United, just right centre of the goal

    Daniel Stapleton
  73. Giggs, Rooney and Van Persie stood over it, looks like the latter to take though

    Daniel Stapleton
  74. GOAL for Manchester United 3-0

    Daniel Stapleton
  75. It's a hat trick for Robin Van Persie!!! The keeper has a shocker, but the Dutchman doesn't care

    Daniel Stapleton
  76. Gago took a step to the wrong side just before Van Persie struck, even so it's almost gone into the centre of the goal, not the greatest free kick in the world albeit some pace on the ball. Three shots, three goals for Robin tonight!

    Daniel Stapleton
  77. I'm minded of our exit a few seasons ago to Bayern Munich, when it seemed we'd done the hard work only to get sucker punched with a Robben strike late on (albeit down to ten men that evening). A goal for Olympiakos puts them through on away goals, and they have an attacking free kic

    Daniel Stapleton
  78. Well. Domínguez hits it, massive deflection off Van Persie and De Gea is stranded. Just floats wide for a corner

    Daniel Stapleton
  79. Jones with a massive header clear, he jumped twice as high as anyone else! But Olympiakos will get it back, Rooney fouls his man competing for the ball with a leading arm

    Daniel Stapleton
  80. Perez has to score that, it's a glorious chance completely free at the back post. His blushes are spared though as the offside flag goes up anyway

    Daniel Stapleton
  81. Perez is going off following that miss, Valdez to replace

    Daniel Stapleton
  82. Rafael and Valencia combine and it's another corner for United. Rooney to take

    Daniel Stapleton
  83. Scrap that, Giggs fancies it

    Daniel Stapleton
  84. Taken short, intechange with Valencia advances Giggs towards goal. It's slid into Jones path, but with so many bodies between him and the goal, and under pressure, it floats harmlessly high and wide of goal

    Daniel Stapleton
  85. Evra is in the book and out of the next round should we progress. No complaints, late on Valdez

    Daniel Stapleton
  86. The most ridiculous yellow card of the evening, Salino is caught offside, and in his frustration smashes the ball away

    Daniel Stapleton
  87. Domínguez with a snap shot on the edge of the area. Dead central, can't get above the ball and it's over the bar. Fair chance

    Daniel Stapleton
  88. One eye, one foot... Valencia doesn't do pairs

    Daniel Stapleton
  89. United just starting to drop off, looking to play on the break but inviting pressure and encouraging the Greeks on. Indeed Manolas gets another stike in on goal, sharp effort but straight at De Gea

    Daniel Stapleton
  90. Still 25 minutes to play, but United are sitting so deep. Moyes needs to communicate to keep playing the same way as before, it will only take one goal for this tie to swing

    Daniel Stapleton
  91. Nice move from United, Rooney and Valencia heavily involved. Eventually Rafael is the man to strike at goal, and he wins a corner that Giggs will take

    Daniel Stapleton
  92. Cleared. Rafael slips rushing back, not for the first time tonight, United quick to get other bodies behind the ball and slow the counter down

    Daniel Stapleton
  93. Much better shape from United tonight, only ever one front man, although Welbeck and Rooney have always been quick to support. It looks more like a Ferguson European side, and they've played like it too

    Daniel Stapleton
  94. Rooney finds Van Perise, but he's offside. The Dutchman heard the whistle, but still took the shot anyway, lucky not to get booked there

    Daniel Stapleton
  95. Brilliant development, the moustachioed magnificence of Machado enters the fray

    Daniel Stapleton
  96. Young will come on imminently, you'd think surely for Valencia

    Daniel Stapleton
  97. Confirmed. Great desire from Valencia tonight, had no right playing on with that injury, but he's played his part. Well done Sir

    Daniel Stapleton
  98. Just over ten minutes to go. Moyes is concerned, he's waving at the defence to push up, he knows the dangers of trying to defend this one out

    Daniel Stapleton
  99. Olympiakos win a controversial corner, seemed like the ball had been carried over the line for a throw in in the build up

    Daniel Stapleton
  100. Van Persie clears. But here comes another wave, and Domínguez gets a slice of luck to beat Welbeck... his fierce strike parried away by De Gea, and the follow up is over the bar

    Daniel Stapleton
  101. Darren Fletcher is coming on for United, he replaces Welbeck. Meanwhile a change for our opponents, Vergos for Fuster

    Daniel Stapleton
  102. Another great run by Rooney, down the touchline then across the byline, it seemed a few times he was about to be dispossesed, but somehow he just ploughed on through. Eventually a free kick won for a foul on Evra

    Daniel Stapleton
  103. Rooney takes, whipped in dangerous but punched away. Falls to Fletcher, chance to shoot but prefers to find Rooney again... and it's a fizzer just off target

    Daniel Stapleton
  104. Into the last five minutes. Olympiakos aren't giving up, they'll push til the end

    Daniel Stapleton
  105. They win a corner. It's soft, Rooney tracking back and his challenge puts it out. But the corner comes to nothing

    Daniel Stapleton
  106. Wow, big header from Jones. The Greeks are pressing, I counted eight players in the box there. Last gasp away for a corner. United clear, but it keeps coming back at us

    Daniel Stapleton
  107. Rooney wins some relief with a free kick wide left halfway into the Olympiakos half

    Daniel Stapleton
  108. Van Persie is down clutching his hamstring...

    Daniel Stapleton
  109. Seems to be a contact injury rather than a pull, but the Dutchman is either milking time down excellently (not condoning), or is in some genuine pain here

    Daniel Stapleton
  110. Fellaini is ready to come on, meanwhile the referee has booked Marcano for his complaining, clearly feels this is time wasting. Ferdinand takes exception and gives it some agro!

    Daniel Stapleton
  111. The Belgian replaces Van Persie who can't continue. Five minutes of stoppage time to play

    Daniel Stapleton
  112. Predictable groans from the Old Trafford faithful!

    Daniel Stapleton
  113. Dare I say the stoppage has helped United, some of the sting has been taken out of the game just at the right time. Hopefully nothing too serious

    Daniel Stapleton
  114. United have yet another corner. Giggs will take, and will surely go short and hold it in the corner

    Daniel Stapleton
  115. Indeed, and with the assistance of Fellaini, a few minutes wasted and another corner won

    Daniel Stapleton
  116. Campbell crosses the ball in, but it's heading for the top corner... De Gea collects, but for a moment there was an air of inevitability about events there!

    Daniel Stapleton
  117. Fellaini does well, collects a lumped ball upfield, and wins a free kick. But possession surrendered quickly

    Daniel Stapleton
  118. Last 30 seconds, the ball is punted up by the Greeks...

    Daniel Stapleton
  119. Cleared. It comes back in... no time, that's it! United progress, great effort on the night and the result fully deserved

    Daniel Stapleton
  120. The defeat hits some of the Olympiakos players hard as they slump to their feet. They clearly felt this was a great chance for them tonight, but they came up short in the end

    Daniel Stapleton
  121. The quarter final draw is on Friday. Rooney and Giggs are being interviewed on the pitchside. Their heavy media training means there's nothing too interesting to report

    Daniel Stapleton
  122. Slightly facetious, but arguably the best five minutes Fellaini has had in a United shirt at the end there!

    Daniel Stapleton
  123. So, United under Moyes progress further in Europe than Ferguson's side did last... finally a positive for the new manager to cling onto!

    Daniel Stapleton
  124. Possible opponents next round: Barcelona, Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, Chelsea, PSG, Dortmund, Munich

    Daniel Stapleton
  125. Personally I'd prefer Dortmund from that lot, but it's tough whoever we face. Then again it should be tough, it's the Champions League quarter finals. United go into a tricky weekend fixture away at West Ham in high spirits at least

    Daniel Stapleton
  126. Ok, that wraps up tonight's Live Blog, thank you for reading. The final word goes to evered7

    Daniel Stapleton
  127. "Giggs is the man. Hope RVP’s injury isn’t too bad. Rooney played really well and Valencia shows brilliant commitment."

    Daniel Stapleton
